Ijams offers a variety of programs for adults of all knowledge levels and abilities. Whether you're looking to embark on an underground adventure, refine your artistic skills, or join Ijams' ongoing programs and workshops, Ijams has the program for you!

CAVING TRIPS

Ages: 18+ | 2.5 hrs.

Experience a morning of underground exploration in Ijams’ cave system! Join a team of Ijams naturalists to navigate this unique ecosystem as you search for creatures that call the caverns home.

 

Caving at Ijams is a very rewarding activity, but also physically and mentally demanding. Participants must expect to navigate slippery, muddy hills, knee-deep water, and cool temperatures during a majority of the program

NATURE JOURNALING WORKSHOPS

Ages: 18+ | 1.5 hrs.

Invite observation and creativity into your life through nature journaling! During this immersive workshop, you'll become a more intentional observer, connecting with the natural world in new ways while learning helpful techniques to translate those discoveries onto paper. No artistic or naturalist experience necessary.

TENNESSEE NATURALIST PROGRAM

Ages: 18+ | Monthly, March - November

Ijams is proud to offer a chapter of the Tennessee Naturalist Program (TNP) to East Tennessee! Over a year, participants learn about the plants and animals that live in this region from local experts to become better naturalists and stewards for the environment.

Ages: 18+ | Ongoing

IJAMS HIKING CLUB

Ages: 18+ | CURRENTLY ON PAUSE, WILL RETURN IN 2025

Ijams Hiking Club is for people 18+ who want to hike some of the most rigorous and rewarding trails the Knoxville area has to offer. You can join the club through full- or half-year memberships, or monthly guest passes. 

 

The club meets on the first Saturday of each month. Seasonal start times vary from 8 am to 10 am. Hiking routes, meeting places, and times are sent out one week prior via email. You can expect to hike up to 5 miles on any given outing over terrain of various difficulties. 

Cost

Returning Member - Full Year: $55

New Member- Full Year: $75

Monthly Guest Pass: $12/hike

Behind the scenes
BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOURS WITH ANIMAL AMBASSADORS

Ages: 6+ | 1-1.5 hrs.

Behind-the-scenes animal tours provide a more intimate experience with Ijams' unreleasable animals. You'll spend one hour with the animal care coordinator, meet the animals, and learn about their individual stories and care.

The cost for a tour is $50 per person; up to four may attend. Please contact Savannah Blackman at sblackman@ijams.org for more information.

Ages: All ages | August. 12th, 2023  | 6:30AM - 1:00PM

Join Ijams Nature Center for the 2023 Ijams Hummingbird Festival: A Celebration of Wings! Learn about and have close encounters with some of your favorite winged creatures, from ruby-throated hummingbirds, other backyard birds, moths, butterflies, bees, bats, and more!
