About the Event

Join Riley Douglas of the Museum of Infinite Outcomes at Ijams for an all-inclusive natural dyeing class!

Participants will focus on the learning process of indigo dye using the salt and the oxidation process of the plant itself. This class is excellent for beginners, dyers, or folks who want to dip into the history behind the hues of blues. The course will last three hours, so prepare for all weather types. Please bring a bottle of water and some snacks. All students will leave with a hand-dyed silk scarf!

Riley’s practice delves into the history of Appalachian craft and building natural dye gardens. She is a Board Member of the Museum of Infinite Outcomes and a certified Master Gardener from The University of Tennessee, specializing in growing, harvesting, and manipulating dye plants. Riley’s personal and professional practices focus on a maker’s role in creating sustainable methodologies and lifestyles. During the pandemic, she took on a new project of serving with Knoxville Community Development Corporation as Knoxville Community Development Coordinator, working with low-income and elderly housing to teach garden-to-table gardening and creative workshops like dyeing with kitchen scraps and container gardening for your health.

All supplies are included. Tickets are $65 for this three-hour workshop. No previous experience is required. The workshop will take place at Ijams Visitor Center and it will be outdoors.

Ages 16 and up are welcome. Participants under 18 years old must have an accompanying adult. Snacks and drinks are welcome!

Pre-registration is required.
