About the Event
Recommended for ages 18 and up
Description: This course takes a deep dive into the world of salamanders around Ijams and explores the scientific order Urodela. Proper handling techniques will be demonstrated to ensure the safety of any salamanders caught. Anatomy and physiology of these unique amphibians will be discussed using live specimens, and participants will be able to explore the environments that are vital to the life history of East Tennessee salamanders. Participants will also learn important field markings for any species encountered and how range maps play an integral role in species identification.
Materials Participants Should Bring: Sturdy walking shoes, hand lens, field journal, water bottle, snack and a hands-free way to carry supplies.
Information to Note: Participants should be prepared to go off trail and into the mud to overturn rocks and logs.
Location: This program meets outside the Ijams Visitor Center, and spends the entire program outside investigating salamanders on Ijams trails.
No walk-ins will be accepted. Every participant must have a ticket. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Ijams awards full refunds for any cancellations up to 7 days before a program, or if Ijams cancels a program due to inclement weather. Refunds are not awarded for programs with fees of $5 or less for any reason. Tickets are non-transferable.
