About the Event

Beginning to Bird is designed for ages 11 and up

Description: Ijams' Beginning to Bird program helps you take or re-take your first steps into the world of bird watching. This month, we will learn how to identify hawks from hundreds of yards away. These birds are currently undergoing an impressive migration, and they are readily identified in flight. We will also spend time with Ijams' resident red-tailed hawk to learn more about these birds' anatomy up close. Finally we will highlight places to go and view this migration. It usually peaks around September 20th with hundreds of Broadwing Hawks being seen in a single day. Come and be amazed by migrating hawks.

Materials Participants Should Bring: Good walking shoes, water, binoculars (Ijams can provide binoculars as needed), journal, something to write with, and bird field guide if you have one.

Information to Note: This is a bird walk and we will go on trails with roots, rocks, and some elevation change. Arrive ready to walk approximately .75 to 1 miles.

Directions: This program meets outside the Ijams Visitor Center on the main plaza.

No walk-ins will be accepted. Every participant must have a ticket. Children under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Ijams awards full refunds for any cancellations up to 7 days before a program, or if Ijams cancels a program due to inclement weather. Refunds are not awarded for programs with fees of $5 or less for any reason. Tickets are non-transferable.
