About the Event

Recommended for ages 18 and up.

Description: Explore the unusual world of butterflies while we discover what species are flying at the nature center. We will go through field and forest to look at butterfly adaptations, ecosystem roles, how butterflies are helping us in unexpected ways, and how you can help our local flying flowers. Learn tips for identification, online resources and opportunities for community science.

Materials Participants Should Bring: Comfortable trail walking shoes, a journal to take notes, hat, water bottle, snacks and sunscreen. Please, no bug spray. Optional: camera, binoculars and butterfly field guide.

Information to Note:This program is led by Steve McGaffin, Curator of Education at Zoo Knoxville and Director of the Tennessee Butterfly Monitoring Network. Butterfly nets will be available.

Location: This program meets at Ijams Nature Center. We will be indoors approximately 20 minutes. The rest of the class is spent on the trail.

No walk-ins will be accepted. Every participant must have a ticket. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Ijams awards full refunds for any cancellations up to 7 days before a program, or if Ijams cancels a program due to inclement weather.

Refunds are not awarded for programs with fees of $5 or less for any reason. Tickets are non-transferable.
