WILDLIFE FAQ

Q1. I see a bird or animal. What is it?
Q2. I found a feather, nest, skull etc. Can I keep it?

1. I see a bird or animal. What is it?
You are probably going to need to call us for the definitive answer, but for the best results observe the animal carefully before you call. Does it have any distinguishing features such as stripes, spots, colors? Does it have any distinguishing behaviors such as head bobbing, flaring its tail to show its tail stripes etc.? Is it alone or in a flock? Where is it - on the ground, in the bushes, in the top of a tree? What is it doing? What is it eating? After you have the answer to these questions, give us a call 577-4717. We would like to help you. However we cannot confirm the identity of snakes, spiders, or insects over the phone.

2. I found a feather, nest, skull etc. Can I keep it?
The most likely answer to this question is no. Birds and anything pertaining to them such as feathers, nests, and eggs are protected by several different federal and state laws. You can end up in federal prison for having a handful of songbird feathers in your possession. Regarding other animals, it really varies with the species of the animal, the time of year, and whether you have the proper game licenses. It is best to call TWRA 1-800-332-0900 with your specific question.
