WHAT'S NEW AT IJAMS NATURE CENTER!
Earl Henry Prints and Notecards
Dr. Earl O. Henry was a talented artist and naturalist who left the world an impressive collection of bird paintings. A friend and fellow birdwatcher of Harry Ijams, Dr. Henry frequently visited the Ijams family home in the 1930s and was an active member of the East Tennessee Ornithological Society during its heyday. In an effort to support the restoration of Dr. Henry's mounted bird collection at Ijams Nature Center, Earl Henry, Jr. has generously offered a 50% donation on orders purchased through his website www.earlhenrybirdprints.com through March 31, 2012 excluding sales tax and credit card processing fees. When ordering, please send email through the website to let Earl Henry, Jr. know that your order is in support of Ijams. In addition, Ijams Nature Center has a selection of prints and note cards for sale in the gift shop, items donated by Earl, Jr. Sales will also help fund the mounted bird restoration fund. Jo's Grove - a New Nature Playscape for Children!
Jo's Grove is a new nature playscape designed just for children and located to the left of the grassy emphitheater in front of the visitor center. The area is named after Josephine Ijams one of the four Ijams daughters who were the first children to enjoy the true natural splendor of this property. We hope that within this space, you and your children will find imagination, whimsy, and merriment. This area was specifically designed to support our First Child in the Woods program, which emphasizes the spontaneous learning that occurs when children play outdoors. It is a place that will spark creativity and surprise the senses. Whether your children choose to explore hidden spaces or gather materials for a woodland fort or fairy house, we hope they will truly experience nature. We invite you to enter this special place of exploration, touch the earth, and in turn be touched by it. Read a story featured in the Knoxville Sentinel here. 1st Annual Fairy House & Gnome Home Competition At our grand opening on May 28th more than 50 families joined us for the inaugural Fairy House and Gnome Home Competion. The fairy construction mart was a big hit and the results were staggering! Prizes were awarded for the best home and best costume. Everyone joined in the Fairy Tea Party at the Visitor Center afterwards and by then over 50 fairy houses had sprung up within Jo's Grove. Here are couple of adorable ones, although the level of creativity was phenomenal!
