Staff, volunteers restore historic site at Ijams Mead's Quarry

Formerly known as the Dempsey Johnson Cemetery, Stanton Cemetery is located near Mead’s Quarry Lake on property that is now part of Ijams. Once owned by Dempsey

Johnson it served as their family cemetery with an iron fence enclosing the Johnson family plot. It later evolved into a community cemetery and was renamed the Stanton Cemetery. The first grave is dated 1870, the last 1939.

Over the years the cemetery had been largely forgotten. With the help of local boy scouts, including the recent work of Troop 6, Ijams’ staff members Ed Yost and Ben Nanny have been cleaning up and restoring the site. Many thanks to all that have helped return a proper sense of respect to the isolated location.

A new interpretive sign donated by Troop 6 will soon be erected at the cemetery's entrance.
