Science Discovery field trips benefit thousands

Without Ijams, what would Knoxville be like? That’s not a typical thought that I like to dwell upon. I much prefer the positive, “glass half-full” scenario. Following a highly successful season of Science Discovery programs for area schools, thousands of school-aged children benefited from Ijams’ unique mission and experiences. To be more specific, 3,544 students from 61 schools increased their knowledge, awareness and appreciation for the natural world right here at Ijams.

But success is more than just counting program participant numbers. Recent studies, authored by Lieberman and Hoody, show that environment-based education improve standardized test scores and grade-point averages, while developing problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Of course, each student visiting Ijams will be affected in different ways, but overall Ijams’programs enhance our school system and create lasting impacts for years to come.

From a traditional business view point, environmental education programs are not usually a profitable proposition. Even with the help of many hours from volunteer naturalists (who, by the way, freely share their time—thank you!), such programs cost Ijams more in staff time and material costs than are covered by program fees. Yet, at Ijams we truly believe that the potential benefits of educating our collective youth far outweigh any deficits in revenue.

The Gene & Florence Monday Foundation, Cornerstone Foundation of Knoxville, and City of Knoxville all helped fill the revenue gap this year by providing scholarship opportunities for 1,657 local students on free and reduced lunch programs. On behalf of those students, special thanks to those institutions for helping Ijams achieve its mission right here in Knoxville.
