New solar exhibit to use old wood

Recycled lumber from old shed gets second life

The soon-to-be-opened solar energy exhibit at Ijams will have a new (actually, old) feature—recycled wood. Rough-sawn oak lumber from an old shed will be re-used for a portion of this display. This wood, which is a natural form of stored solar energy, will be resurfaced and used to present much of the solar energy interpretation. This will also be the introduction of a new concept for Ijams—increasing the use of recycled wood. Future presentations will show how important using recycled wood is, and how the results can be more beautiful than you might imagine.

- By Paul Forsyth, Ijams' Exhibit Builder

(Editor's note: Forsyth has a masters degree in wood science and technology from Mississippi State and a PhD in forest products from Oregon State. In short, Paul knows wood.)
