Ijams Nature Center was the recipient of the Keep Knoxville Beautiful Beautification Award at the Annual Orchids and Onions Banquet. The Mead's Quarry site restoration was recognized as an accomplishment in beautification by the panel of judges.

Presenting the award was Ernie Gammon of Lamar Advertising, Knoxville. Gammon stated "I grew up near Mead's Quarry and it had a terrible reputation as a dangerous dumping ground. I now refer to it as a jewel in South Knoxville."

Nominations are made from the community on the Keep Knoxville Beautiful website. A panel of judges selects the winning nominations.  Mead's Quarry won in the South Knoxville section of the City and the evaluation criteria was the overall design, new landscaping and high standards of maintenance.
