Notable Trees of Tennessee at Ijams

Saturday March 24, 2007
Photography Exhibit in Visitor Center through April 30

Tennessee is abundant with trees recognized for their beauty, longevity and historical distinction. Many of the trees are the largest examples of their species within the state, but their impressive size is not the only reason why they are notable; many of them have stood undisturbed for centuries silently witnessing the many twists and turns throughout the history of the Volunteer State.  In fact, it is testament to these trees’ tenacious spirit that they have withstood relentless urban growth and survived with grace in our often unforgiving world.

Thirty-seven photographs, including such impressive species such as post oak, white basswood and Washington hawthorne have been memorably captured through the lens by professional and amateur photographers alike from across the state.

This temporary exhibit is brought to you by the Urban Forestry Council (TUFC) Landmark and Historic Tree Register and the Tennessee Dept. of Agriculture, Division of Forestry Champion Tree Program.

Special Notable Trees Reception - Friday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m.

As a special tie-in with the “Notable Trees of Tennessee” exhibit, we invite the public to join us for a special reception and presentation by Tom Simpson, TUFC Board Member and East Tennessee Regional Urban Forester, and Sam Adams, former President of TUFC and General Manager with Cortese Tree Specialists, as they share further insights into the history of these trees, how we can all ensure their continued preservation, plus the ongoing benefits of urban forestry.

This program is presented by Tennessee Urban Forestry Council, Cortese Specialists and Ijams Nature Center. Light refreshments and good company are guaranteed. Please call 865-577-4717 to register.
