Passenger Pigeon

Through the words of H.P. Ijams, the tragic story of the extinct passenger pigeon is told through interactive and thought-provoking exhibits. Including:

  • Passenger pigeon specimens (on loan from the National Park Service and Frank H. McClung Museum)
  • Touchable carvings by artist Midori Barstow
  • Skull and canine replica’s of extinct and endangered species
  • Stunning visuals of extinct species from around the world by Australian artist, Peter Schouten, the book A Gap in Nature.

Ivory-billed Woodpecker

Through the words of James T. Tanner, the life history of the recently re-discovered ivory-billed woodpecker is told through a series of unique exhibits. Including:

  • Mechanical “Sonny Boy” - the only ivory-bill ever banded by man
  • “Feed the Ivory-bill Chick” and other touchable carvings by artist, Midori Barstow
  • Multi-media kiosk featuring 16mm footage of ivory-bills from 1935; vintage photos by James T. Tanner; range maps, 3-D visualizations; historic drawings and more.
  • James T. Tanner’s banding kit use on “Sonny Boy”
  • Southern cypress swamp diorama with life-size ivory-bill carving.

Exhibit Guide

The Lost Species exhibit is accompanied by a full-color guide featuring a re-printing of H.P. Ijams’ classic text, The Passing of the Passenger Pigeon, first published in 1929. Available in the Ijams Museum Store.
